Waiting with Anticipation

While most of the world is still waiting for the Covid vaccine, and a return to more normal times of visiting friends and family, going out more easily, parties and events, restaurants and unrestricted travel, we are well aware of what waiting with anticipation  feels like.

Winter brings a sense of waiting for warmer, brighter days for some of us. And on our farm we are waiting anxiously, sleeplessly at times, for the new additions of precious baby lambs being born!

We had three ewes who were expecting, and so far Annette had twins; a boy Richard and a girl Jane, and then a few days later Willow had twin boys; Oliver and Oscar. We are thrilled they are all happy and healthy, thriving and getting on with their bouncy, curious little lamb-hoods!

We did hit a bump in the road though, Annette rejected Richard for unknown reasons, so we diligently went out to the barn (can you say ZERO degrees Fahrenheit?), round the clock, to hold her and give her treats so she would let him nurse …. for three long days. But she was aggressive with him, headbutting him away constantly, and our hearts just couldn’t take it. So he’s living inside the house with us now … a bottle baby.

And gosh that’s a precious experience. We had our sheep Landon as a bottle baby and then the goats Petal and Petunia, but this time we’re trying diapers and it’s a heck of a lot easier. (Okay, so as I’m writing this, he’s chomping on the screen of my laptop … but you know. It’s all so darn precious!)

So now we are just waiting for Sweet Pea to finally deliver, but she’s not telling us when that might be, so it requires a bit of patience!

And as a family we are waiting for travel to be possible so we can have our kids Jop and Simi home again. And our daughter Anne is waiting for results back from universities she’s applied to. It is very exciting and encouraging to think of all of the happy times to come.

Whenever I find myself feeling a little down, I tend to try to bring my thoughts to all of the things I’m grateful for. Gratitude is the best cure for the blues I find. But I also love to dream. I dream of home improvements, I dream of goals completed, achievements made, and I enjoy reveling in that optimism and eagerness for what I hope will be possible.

Whatever we are waiting for in life, it’s also important to be at peace with what is.  Eckhart Tolle says that being here and wanting to be there is what causes the suffering in our lives. If we can take a deep centering breath, and accept each moment, accept where we are now we can find peace with the NOW as well as welcoming in what is to come in the future.
